We are finally witnessing a revolution in the way science journalism is conveyed by Latin American mainstream media. As countries with traditionally low scientific production, governments are now aware of the important role that popular science plays in societal development. Thus, non-scientists throughout Latin America need to be enticed with effective communication and distribution strategies: skip boring explanations and make science look fun and approachable, appeal to people’s emotions without compromising accuracy. That’s our main challenge and we are just realizing that.
Pere Estupinyá, former Knight fellow at the MIT and science blogger at El País, on the state of science journalism in Latin America. The quote is part of a video interview (in Spanish) produced by Sandro Medina for the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio.
