Updated: Cuba detains prominent blogger Yoani Sánchez

Yoani Sánchez, one of the most prominent bloggers in Cuba and Latin America, was detained yesterday along with her husband, journalist Reinaldo Escobar. 

According to reports from El País, Yoani and her husband were on their way to cover the trial of Ángel Carromero when they were detained by Cuban authorities.

Yoani has been recognized with a Maria Moors Cabot Prize -awarded by Columbia University for her blog, Generación Y, where she makes critical commentary about thes social conditions and limited political freedoms faced by Cubans under the Castros regime.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for her inmediate release and is following the case in real time with its @CPJAmericas Twitter account and the hashtag #freeyoani.

Reuters reports that Government-linked blogger Yohandry Fontana, said that Yoani, her husband and their driver were arrested because they were attempting a “provocation and media show” at the trial of Spaniard Angel Carromero.

No further details are provided about the release or condition of the detainees.
